⚠ Situation Summary — March 6, 2026

Since February 28, 2026, an escalation of armed conflict across the Middle East has led to missile and drone strikes across the Gulf region, resulting in the closure of UAE, Qatari, Kuwaiti, and Bahraini airspace. Dubai International Airport has suspended ~80% of flights. Muscat International Airport remains the primary functioning gateway out of the region. Tens of thousands of stranded travellers are now making the overland journey from Dubai or Sharjah into Oman to fly home. This guide consolidates the best available intelligence to help you do that safely.

Hatta – Al Wajajah Border Crossing

The Hatta/Al Wajajah crossing is the main land border connecting Dubai to Oman. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Here's the step-by-step process under current crisis conditions.

Step 1 — Before You Leave
Apply for your Oman e-Visa in advance
Visit evisa.rop.gov.om before travel. Processing at the border is available but extremely slow given current volumes. Completing this ahead of time can save 1–2+ hours. Check below for visa-on-arrival eligibility by nationality.
Step 2 — Gather Documents
Prepare printed copies of all documents
You need: valid passport (6+ months remaining), UAE residence visa (if applicable), Oman e-visa or eligibility confirmation, vehicle registration (mulkiya) if driving, NOC if in a borrowed/financed car, Oman car insurance ("Orange Card" — available at border), and onward flight booking confirmation.
Step 3 — Drive to Hatta
130km from central Dubai via the E44 highway
Fill up with fuel before leaving Dubai. Fuel stations in the Hajar Mountain section are sparse. Allow 1.5–2 hours to the border. Depart at 7am is strongly recommended to beat the midday rush. The road is scenic but winding through the mountains.
Step 4 — UAE Exit (Hatta side)
Pay UAE exit fee: AED 35–40 per person (cash or card)
Hand passport (and Emirates ID for residents) to the officer. They will process your UAE exit stamp. You may pass through a customs check. Keep moving once cleared toward the Oman post. Current border wait times: 3–6+ hours under crisis conditions (was 30–90 min normally).
Step 5 — No-Man's Land
Drive through the mountain corridor between posts
A short but dramatic stretch through the Hajar mountains separates the two border facilities. Stay on the road — do not stop.
Step 6 — Oman Entry (Al Wajajah side)
Immigration, visa stamp, insurance purchase
Park and enter the building. Present your passport and e-visa (or apply for visa on arrival here — expect long queues). Purchase Oman car insurance ("Orange Card") at the border office if you haven't already. Once stamped, you are in Oman. Omani taxis will be waiting for those without a car.
Step 7 — Drive to Muscat
320km on good roads, 3–4.5 hours to Muscat Airport
Take Route 1 (R1) toward Muscat. Road quality is excellent. Muscat International Airport (MCT) is 32km from the old city center. Allow at least 12 hours total from Dubai to airport check-in, per airline advisories.
✓ Pro Tip: Best Departure Time

A 7am departure from Dubai is the most widely recommended strategy. It lets you clear the border before the midday rush builds, and reach Muscat Airport by early afternoon — in time for evening international departures.

Oman Entry Requirements by Nationality

Always verify your status at evisa.rop.gov.om before travel. Requirements can change. Pre-applying online is strongly recommended to avoid long queues at the border during crisis conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the UAE–Oman land border open right now?
Yes. As of March 6, 2026, the Hatta–Al Wajajah border crossing is open in both directions, 24/7. It has remained operational throughout the current conflict. Expect significantly longer wait times than usual — reports from early in the crisis indicated 3–4 hour waits at the border checkpoint, and current times are likely longer given volume.
How long does the full journey from Dubai to Muscat Airport take?
Under normal conditions: approximately 5–6 hours (130km to Hatta border + 30–90 min processing + 320km drive to Muscat). Under crisis conditions with heavy traffic and border delays, you should plan for 10–14 hours total. Airlines advise arriving at Muscat Airport at least 12 hours before your flight, accounting for the land journey. Departing at 7am from Dubai is strongly recommended.
Do I need a visa to enter Oman from the UAE?
It depends on your nationality. Approximately 100 nationalities qualify for visa on arrival (including most EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and Japanese passport holders). UAE residents of any nationality also qualify for visa on arrival for up to 14 days. Apply online in advance at evisa.rop.gov.om to avoid hours-long queues at the border. You'll need a return/onward flight ticket and proof of accommodation.
Can I take a regular UAE taxi across the border?
No. Standard Dubai taxis and ride-hail services (Uber, Careem) are not authorized for cross-border travel. You need a licensed tour operator or transport company with a valid tour certificate for UAE–Oman crossings. Additionally, UAE-plated cars cannot be driven in Oman unless the driver is the vehicle's registered owner. Omani taxis and licensed transfer services wait on the Oman side of the border.
What are the Oman Air / SalamAir buses, and can I still take them?
Both airlines launched integrated bus transfers from Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah directly to Muscat International Airport. The original schedule was March 3–5, but SalamAir's website shows the service running through March 10. Tickets must be purchased in advance through the airlines or authorized agents (musafir.com, SNTTA). The service is only for passengers with a confirmed onward flight with one of those two airlines, and only for those eligible for Oman visa on arrival. Fare: approximately 50 OMR. Call Oman Air or SalamAir directly to confirm availability.
Is there a sea route from UAE to Oman or India?
There is no viable civilian passenger ferry option at this time. Oman's National Ferries Company only operates domestic coastal routes (Muscat–Khasab, Shinas–Khasab). Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted (~81% drop in transits) following reported attacks on tankers in the area. One option mentioned is a boat from Dubai to Mumbai, but this route passes through the Strait of Hormuz where active maritime incidents have been reported — this is considered extremely high risk and is not recommended.
How much cash should I carry?
Advisors to high-net-worth evacuees are recommending up to 100,000 AED ($27,000) per person in cash for the wealthiest travelers using private services. For regular travelers, you should carry: AED 40–50 in cash for the UAE exit fee, a credit/debit card for Oman visa and car insurance at the border, and enough cash or card access for food, fuel, accommodation in Muscat, and any unexpected transport costs. ATMs are available in Muscat.
My government is organizing an evacuation. What should I do?
Immediately register with your government's crisis system if you haven't already. UK nationals: Register at gov.uk and wait to be contacted — do NOT go to Muscat Airport without FCO contact. Dutch nationals: Complete the Crisis Contact Form before March 6 noon Dutch time. German nationals: Contact the German embassy and watch for Lufthansa/TUI land transfer coordination. Others: Check your embassy's official social media and website. Most governments are contacting registered nationals directly with specific instructions. Do not go to any airport without confirmation from your airline or government.
Will my UAE residence visa still be valid when I return?
The UAE local authorities have indicated they will show flexibility regarding the renewal of residence permits given the current crisis. If your visa was near expiry, do not panic — extensions are being accommodated. Keep your residence permit documentation with you and check with UAE immigration authorities upon return.
Are there flights from other airports in Oman?
Yes. In addition to Muscat (MCT), Salalah Airport and Sohar Airport are also open. Check those airports' websites for current schedules. Salalah is much further south (~1,000km from Muscat). Sohar is a smaller airport north of Muscat. Muscat remains the most connected hub with the widest range of international destinations.
Is Oman itself safe? Have there been attacks?
Oman has experienced fewer reported incidents than several neighbouring countries and has maintained an open airspace throughout the crisis — making it the most practical transit option currently available in the region. There was a drone incident and a vessel explosion reported off the coast of Oman early in the crisis. The situation remains fluid. Always monitor your own government's travel advisory and Oman's official communications before and during travel.

Essential Tips for the Journey

🕐
Leave at 7am
7am is the optimal departure time from Dubai. You'll clear the border before the midday rush and arrive at Muscat Airport by early afternoon with buffer time before evening departures.
📋
Print Everything
Print physical copies of your passport, UAE residence visa, Oman e-visa, vehicle registration, flight booking, and hotel confirmation. Do not rely on a phone that may die or lose signal in the mountains.
💻
Pre-Apply Oman Visa
Apply at evisa.rop.gov.om before you arrive at the border. This can save 1–2+ hours at the checkpoint, which is currently overwhelmed. Visa on arrival is possible but the queue is brutal.
Full Tank Before Hatta
Fill up your fuel tank in Dubai or Hatta before crossing. Fuel stations through the Hajar Mountain section on the Oman side are limited. Don't assume you can top up easily once inside Oman.
💧
Water, Food & Medicines
Bring enough water, food, and any medications for 2–3 days. Essential supplies in the UAE have been in high demand. Oman has supplies but availability near the border crossing may be limited. Plan for long waits and do not rely on being able to restock along the route.
📱
Join WhatsApp Groups
Active WhatsApp and Facebook groups are sharing real-time border conditions, rideshare coordination, and flight updates. Search "Dubai Muscat evacuation" or "UAE Oman escape 2026" on Facebook and Reddit to find current threads.
🚗
Book a Licensed Transfer
Standard taxis and Uber cannot cross the border legally. You need a licensed tour operator vehicle. Call Al Khanjry on 056-204-9774, or contact LNK Oman on +968 7228 0555 for professional cross-border transfers.
🏨
Book Muscat Accommodation
Hotel availability in Muscat is severely strained. Book accommodation as soon as possible before heading out — you may not be able to fly immediately upon arrival. Most airlines need you to have proof of accommodation for visa purposes too.
🕌
Respect Ramadan
Oman enforces Ramadan rules more strictly than the UAE. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours while in Oman. This is a legal requirement, not merely social courtesy. Keep food and drinks in your car.
🔋
Charge Everything
Fully charge your phone, power banks, and any devices before leaving. Signal may be intermittent in the Hajar Mountains. Download offline maps of the Hatta–Muscat route on Google Maps or Maps.me before you go.
💳
Card + Cash Mix
Keep AED 50+ cash for UAE exit fee (sometimes cash only). Have a credit card for Oman visa fees and car insurance. Muscat ATMs are functional. Avoid exchanging large sums at border rates.
🧘
Plan for Delays
The border took 3–4 hours in early crisis conditions and is likely worse now. Factor this into your flight planning. "Allow at least 12 hours before your departure" is the official airline guideline for the land journey from UAE.
