Stay long enough to slow down
Liwa lies in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, on the edge of the Empty Quarter. Choose accommodation first and confirm the arrival route with the property. A remote desert stay can involve a very different drive from a city hotel transfer.
Our recommendation is two nights if your schedule allows: arrive in daylight, spend a full day locally, and leave after a proper rest. A one-night stop can work, but it gives you less flexibility if the drive takes longer than expected.
Let an operator handle the dunes
Book any off-road driving through a suitable local operator. A road rental and a map pin are not a desert-driving plan. Ask where an activity starts, what transport is provided and whether it fits your group.
Dune views at the beginning or end of the day are a good reason to stay overnight. Festivals and race events have specific dates; check the current calendar rather than assuming an event is running because photographs show it.
Where Liwa fits in a UAE trip
For a first five-day Dubai visit, choose a nearer desert outing. For two weeks, Liwa can replace some northern-emirate days if a desert stay matters more to you than a wide circuit.
We would favour the cooler months for time outdoors. Even then, travel with water and a confirmed route, and use property or operator advice for local conditions. Do not add Liwa to the two-week itinerary without removing something else.
