Wadi Shawka: a practical starting point

Wadi Shawka in Ras Al Khaimah has a dam area and routes into a rocky landscape. The developed recreation area is an easier starting point than heading straight into an unmarked valley. Longer routes vary in exposure and terrain.

We would start early in the cooler months and choose a short, clearly described route for a first visit. Bring water, footwear with grip and offline route information. Do not use a photograph of a pool as proof that water will be present or safe to enter.

Shees and Hatta offer different levels of activity

Shees Park works for a mountain outing with fewer route-finding demands. Walking beyond the park requires a separate plan. Hatta has managed activities and designated outdoor routes, which can suit a group wanting clear booking and equipment arrangements.

Choose the activity for the least experienced person in your group. A scenic drive, a park visit and a hike are all valid ways to see the mountains; they do not need to be combined on the same day.

Wadi Wurayah is a protected reserve

Wadi Wurayah in Fujairah is normally closed to the public. Special organised conservation visits do not make it a walk-in attraction. Do not follow old blog directions to enter, camp or swim there.

Use an open, managed alternative and follow official access information. Stay out of channels during rain or flood warnings, including when rain is falling farther upstream. Do not enter floodwater or drive around a closure.

Leave room for the conditions

Mountain outings work better as a flexible day than as a stop immediately before a flight. Keep a city or coast alternative ready. Our two-week route includes outdoor choices, with the option to replace them if conditions are poor.
